Fashion Trends Winter 2012

Trends for this Winter are warm, practical and best of all, comfortable!


Let's start with Edwardiana Drama. This look is inspired by Downton Abbey and other such period dramas. The long skirts and long-sleeved shirts mean warmth in the cold winter months.




















Supersize bags!  Finally, a good excuse to have a big bag!  Pratical, and stylish, what more could you ask for.





















Now for a little time travel.  We're going back to the 90s, for the skirt and trousers look.  Oh well....at least it's warm...
















Wool! Cosy jumpers, sweater dresses, gloves, scarves, hats and leggings! Kick up the winter look a few more notches and add wool to your outfit! It's super warm and bang on trend. 

Chunky heels, a nice compromise between wearing heels, and not falling flat on your face on ice! 















Heritage.  This look has been fashionable for some time, but due to its practicality and warmth factors, it had dragged on to the Winter collections. 











Oversized jackets, perfect for covering up all your layers, and keeping you nice and cosy in the cold. If the thought of hugely over sized scares you, why not add a belt for a cinched in waist.

My favourite! Black leather jackets are still in fashion! Perfect to defend you against the rain and cold, whilst adding a touch of biker glam to your look!

Congratualtions Rick Baker!

Brace yourselves, ANOTHER post about Rick Baker...and believe me, it won't be the last!!

Rick Baker has been in the industry for around 40 years, creating looks and creatures that everyone has heard of.  From the Grinch, to Michael Jackson's Thriller, King Kong to Men In Black, Batman to The Ring, he's created something that every person on Earth knows of. 

This year, his name was immortalised on the World-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. 

On November the 30th, Rick Baker was awarded with his star.  The seven-time Oscar winning Make-Up and Special Effects Artist was also entered into the Guinness World Records for the Most Academy Award Wins and Most Academy Award Nominations in Make-Up.

In my opinion, he is without a doubt, the best Artist in the Make-Up industry and he very much deserved this amazing recognition of his success. 

Winter Beauty!

Unfortunately, it's Winter.  There's no denying it now.  On the up side, it means a whole new colour palette for the season ahead!  Better yet, it's my favourite colour - PURPLE! 

So whether you want to be subtle and use it on your nails, vamp it up and wear purple lipstick, or go crazy with purple crazy colour in your hair, try out the purple fashion this season!!

Unzipped

Well, that's Halloween passed for another year!  I'm sad to see it go, but before we truly say goodbye, I thought I'd post my Halloween make-up.

HALLOWEEN!

Halloween is fast approaching!  Two weeks today the glorious event will be upon us.  It is absolutely my favourite time of year.  I'm really hoping that over the next couple weeks I will be able to post a few make-up looks for you, but in the mean time, here are some ideas I found that are reasonably simple to recreate.

Practice these, have fun with them and make sure you dress them up properly!  Spending an hour doing your make-up can be a waste of time if you don't complement it with the correct costume. 

 

Special Effects Make-Up

I love Special Effects Make-Up, it's one of my passions.  By far and away, the best Special Effects Artist is Rick Baker.  He's not only won 6 Oscars, but had an Oscar category created especially for him and his work.  He's worked on movies such as: The Exorcist, Planet Of The Apes, Men In Black (I, II, & III), Gorillas In The Mist, The Grinch, Tropic Thunder and King Kong.  He is also responsible for the world famous Michael Jackson's "Thriller" zombie make-up. 

Information about him is quite difficult to find, which is hugely upsetting.  However, I came across this article from 'Empire' magazine which breaks down 13 of his most famous works.  Have a read, learn something new and enjoy!

Red Queen

As part of a college assignment, I decided to recreate the Red Queen make-up from Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland.

The first stage was to block out the eyebrows, which I did using the soap method.  I'm quite against the other two popular methods.  Derma wax is too sticky and difficult to work with, and the final look it creates isn't smooth enough.  Pritt stick. Seriously?  Any professional make-up artist worth their salt would not produce a glue stick from their kit and rub it on a model's face.   

Usually I would then cover the eyebrows with a peach coloured concealer, but as I was painting the face white, I just used a white based concealer.  I then used a creme white paint to cover the entire face, and Illamasqua loose white powder to set and matte the base. 

I blended a blue and a white creme make-up to create the right colour for the eyes, drawing a rough eyebrow on first to give myself guidelines to work from.  I used a light blue eyeshadow to set the blue on the eyes.  I re-drew the eyebrows, again, using a creme make-up.  I find that the creme based make-ups provide the best block colour.  I used a great deal of mascara, but ideally, would be using a thin set of eyelashes on the top and a thicker set on the bottom.  I applied a small beauty spot under the left eye using a black eyeliner pencil.

The lips were already blocked out with white foundation and powder, so I then drew on a rough heart shape with red lip pencil.  This shape came quite far over the natural cupid's bow, and the bottom point about 1cm below the natural lip line.  I blocked in the heart with a dark red lipstick. 

As you can see in the photo, I haven't dressed the model, or applied a wig.  This was just a practice run of the make-up.  Hopefully, I'll be able to create the full look soon!

 

Jean-Paul Gaultier 80s

On the Paris catwalks, Jean-Paul Gaultier showcased his Spring/Summer 2013 collection.  He drew all of his inspiration from the collections which made him famous in the 80s.  Some of the make-up and hair were styled to transform the model into a famous icon of the time, such as; Michael Jackson, Madonna, Annie Lennox and Boy George.  Could this be a revival of the big, bold shapes and styles of the Power and New Romantic 80s?
